Bartonville Asylum Investigation Report

July 28th, 2007
Prepared by: Doug Oram

Investigation period - 3:50pm to approximately 7:00pm

Attendance and equipment responsibility
Doug - thermocouple thermometer, digital camera, digital voice recorder (notation only)
Robert - digital camera, Marantz cassette recorder w/ external stereo microphone (EVP)
Jen Black - video camera
Colleen - A.W. Sperry EMF detector
Caroline - digital camera, digital voice recorder w/ external microphone (EVP)

FIRST CEMETERY

Colleen operated the A.W. Sperry EMF meter during the entire investigation. Although EMF readings generally stayed between 0.0 and 0.9 milligauss, she began to get readings around 2.0mg in the first section of the cemetery. This section of the graveyard inexplicably had a higher baseline than anywhere else in any of the cemeteries. At 3:55 Colleen recorded a spike of 4.1 at the Clarence Thompson grave (3rd row from the south, 12th grave). This was definitely not a baseline reading, nobody had been within approx. 20 feet of her at the time. After trying to recreate for a few minutes and getting nothing, we moved on. After another 15 minutes, a 5.9mg spike was recorded about halfway through the cemetery headed east. I immediately had the group take pictures of that area, hoping we'd catch something concrete. The 5.9 reading only stayed for a second or two, and no matter what we tried we couldn't recreate it. Colleen stayed in the area for a while longer but did not get anything above 2.0mg. A possible but highly improbable explanation for the erratic EMF readings is that there is a cell tower about 400 yards away from the cemetery entrance. This theory was tested at several points, even walking right up near the tower, but EMF readings stayed below our baseline.

The first cemetery is actually split in two by a line of trees and grass - the northern half containing the small concrete headstones while the southern half has recessed grave markers. Caroline thinks that this southern half has been considered by many to be a completely different cemetery - the "fourth cemetery" when in fact there is only three. The group happened upon a small frog that provided some amusement until it was released into the woods on the southern side. After the rest of the group had wandered away, Caroline and Colleen felt like they were being watched and had a feeling that someone wanted them to go away. They called over Jen but as she approached the strange feeling faded. Robert also had some strange occurrences, with his tape recorder shutting off several times. At one point after setting it down on a log to record, he heard a click and, turning back around, found that the cassette door had opened. No one was near the tape recorder when this occurred. Jen's video camera also shut off on its own at one point. Robert caught an orb in one photo, while reviewing his audio recordings he noticed some interference at that time as well.

reddot (1K)Initial 2.2mg (milligauss) reading. This whole area's readings were higher than anywhere else, many readings between 1.0 and 2.2mg
bluedot (1K)4.1mg reading near the Clarence Thompson grave marker
pinkdot (1K)5.7 reading. This was the highest EMF reading we collected in the first cemetery.
aquadot (1K)Strange presence felt in this general area by Caroline and Colleen.

SECOND CEMETERY
- baseline EMF 0.1 - 1.0 / baseline temp 82-83 deg

This is a much smaller cemetery that is concealed behind one of the original Bartonville buildings. This is also the site where the Bookbinder grave marker is located - it appears new and has the inscription:

MANUAL BOOKBINDER
a.k.a. A. BOOKBINDER
1878 - 1910
IN EACH DEATH HE FOUND GREAT SORROW,
HE WEPT AT EACH PASSING TEARS FOR
THE UNLOVED AND FORGOTTEN
NOW, "OLD BOOK" WE WEEP FOR YOU.

About ten yards to the east of the Bookbinder marker, Colleen recorded a whopping 7.0 mg EMF that only lasted for a second and then returned to baseline. The group took pictures of the area, but nothing suspicious was recorded. This was the only activity in the investigation of the second cemetery.

THIRD CEMETERY

This cemetery is located to the northeast of the "Bookbinder" cemetery and is accessed from another road. There was no recorded activity in this location. EMF readings and temperature stayed within baseline.

BOWEN BUILDING

The group did a quick trip up to the actual Bowen building, the most dramatic of the Bartonville buildings. No activity was recorded in the brief sightseeing trip. We did discover that the north side of the building has a barred entrance that allows you to look down the entire length of the main corridor. The building is condemned and is extremely hazardous as well as illegal to enter.
